Dr. Matthew Budoff M.D
Investigator, Cardiology Professor of Medicine, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA

Leading Expert in Preventive Cardiology & Cardiac CTD
Matthew J. Budoff has built his career around one mission: detecting heart disease before it strikes. A professor of medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and Director of Cardiac Computed Tomography (CT) at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, he is internationally recognized as one of the pioneers of cardiac CT imaging. At Harbor-UCLA, Dr. Budoff leads programs that push the boundaries of preventive cardiology. His work focuses on catching cardiovascular disease—the leading cause of death in the United States—at its earliest stages, when intervention can change the course of a patient’s life.
Through groundbreaking studies, his team has demonstrated how advanced imaging can measure coronary artery calcium and track the progression of atherosclerosis, helping physicians identify high-risk patients long before symptoms appear.Beyond detection, Dr. Budoff’s research explores how therapies can slow, stop, or even reverse heart disease. His investigations extend into related conditions, showing how cardiac CT can also assess aortic and valve calcification, pericardial and liver fat, myocardial scarring, and even bone mineral density—all from a single scan.
